Coleen's Story
Life
I went to Lamar University after graduating from Lee. I graduated with a double major in English and Secondary Ed with a minor in Earth Science. Thanks to "Lady Jane" Mitcham, I always wanted to teach high school English, but ended up in 8th grade English and loved it! I married in my junior year of college, taught 4 years in Nederland while getting an M.A. in English and my husband finished his Bachelors in Accounting. We moved to Houston, and I taught astronauts' children in Clear Creek ISD. We moved to the Bear Creek area, and I switched to Katy ISD and taught both 8th grade English and Earth Science at the same school for 24 years. I decided it was time to retire when I started teaching children of former students! After 14 years of marriage we had our first daughter, Erin, followed two years later by our second daughter, Katie. They both became heavily involved in soccer, and I became a "soccer mom" right along with them. Erin is a pre-vet major at Oklahoma State on a soccer/academic scholarship. She is applying for vet school in the fall. Katie is graduating from high school this year and headed to Tex...Expand for more
as State to major in marketing. My husband is CFO of a business machine company. He's managed to put up with me for 35 years. Since I retired, I've become interested in wine, scrapbooking, and travel, and am staying busy subbing a couple of days a week at my old school in Katy. I played competitive tennis quite seriously before kids and would like to get back into that now that I have more time. I keep in touch with several of my old high school buddies, getting together with them several times a year, and e-mailing every week or so.
School
I went to private first grade at Mrs. Colley's Private School, San Jacinto Elementary, Baytown Junior High, and I graduated from Lee in 1966, the last class to graduate in a "one-high-school-town." I am one of those GGCISD students who can say, with the exception of Mrs. Colley's school, that all of my public schools burned down! I was a Brigadier and a member of the Anchor Club. I loved growing up in Baytown, and I think I received an awesome education. I attribute my interest and success in teaching to the wonderful teachers I had from elementary all the way to high school.
